Representing geographic dynamics

چکیده

A number of related yet distinct subfields of GIScience associated with representing geographic dynamics have recently emerged. Researchers in spatio-temporal theory and data modeling, spatial process modeling, complex systems, and agent-based modeling all consider dynamic (or temporal) aspects of geographic phenomena germane to their respective specialty. Given this common ground, an obvious question arises as to the degree to which these communities have shared goals that might be forwarded through collaboration. In short, where might synergies or unique insights lie, and what redundant efforts might be streamlined? This short position paper looks at two research areas (and communities) that are the focus of this workshop: agent-based modeling and spatiotemporal data modeling.

A Causal Approach for Modelling Spatial Dynamics∗ A Preliminary Report

We propose a causal approach, involving events identified by their causes and effects, for the modelling of spatial dynamics. The suitability of situation calculus as a high-level formalism for representing and reasoning about spatial dynamics is explored and the causal framework is formalised using the same. A systematic illustration of the manner in which various aspects of axiomatic qualitat...

Analytical Support for Integrated Water Resources Management: A New Method for Addressing Spatial and Temporal Variability

This paper discusses the development of an analytical support system for implementation of the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) process. The system integrates four analytical tools: (i) geographic information system; (ii) system dynamics simulation; (iii) agent-based model; and (iv) hydrologic simulation. The choice of tools is driven by their ability to (a) respond to the main requ...

Chapter 13 Cancer of the Female Breast

SEER selects areas on the basis of their ability to operate and maintain a population-based cancer reporting system and the epidemiologic significance of their population subgroups. The analysis in this article is from 12 geographic areas representing approximately 14% of the United States population. The geographic areas include the States of Connecticut, Iowa, New Mexico, Utah, and Hawaii; th...

Human population growth as proximate cause of wetland dynamics

The study examined the influence of population as proximate cause of wetland dynamics in the lower Ogun river basin of southwestern, Nigeria. Both primary and secondary data were used for the study. The primary data included 100 questionnaires administered and distributed among the fadama users group representing 10% of the estimated population of the group. Satellite images of years 1972, 1984...

GIS Representation for Visualizing and Mining Geographic Dynamics

Geographic dynamics refers to the development of processes that shape our environment. While geographic dynamics is central to geographic understanding, the current GIS technology is incapable of capturing information that reflects the working of geographic processes, such as spread of a wildfire, development of a weather system, and propagation of a disease. Inability to represent geographic d...
